What Lies Beneath is a campaign and sourcebook for the Age of Ambition roleplaying game. It follows a band of Legionnaires — elite guards of Melanoc — as they patrol the streets, navigate politics and discover an unknown subterranean civilization. Along the way, the heroes must face off against criminal organizations, explore prophetic dreams, navigate cultural differences, uncover corruption in the highest echelons of society and make a name for themselves as the defenders of the city.

It’s now been four and a half days since the launch of the What Lies Beneath Kickstarter, and earlier today we reached our second stretch goal!

This goal unlocks a poster map of Melanoc, the city where the campaign takes place. It will be made available to all backers in a high-resolution image format and available in print as an add-on. The next goal unlocks a second one-sheet scenario for Age of Ambition. It will be made available to all backers in PDF.

Earlier today we blew through our first stretch goal, unlocking a short scenario set in or around the city of Melanoc. It will be provided in PDF, free to all backers!

And as a write this, we're more than halfway to our second stretch goal! That goal unlocks a poster map of Melanoc, the city in which What Lies Beneath takes place! It will be provided free to all backers in a high resolution image format, and will be available in print as an add-on.

Featured Preview: Campaign Structure

What Lies Beneath is a combined sourcebook and campaign. It features a detailed look at the city of Melanoc and the heretofore uncontacted civilization beneath it. This is followed by a complete campaign arc that will bring characters all the way from paroling the streets, to discovering the civilization, to wheeling and dealing in municipal politics, to the thrilling finale as they defend the city against imminent invasion.

The campaign is going to be structured similarly to the “Plot Point” campaigns released by Pinnacle Entertainment and a number of other companies. This means that there will be a core campaign arc, which tells the big story of Melanoc in the background, but it is constructed in a way that gives GMs the freedom to write and run their own stories in the foreground.

Essentially there are a number of pivotal events and scenarios that drive the core story arc forward, but these are intended to be interspersed between other adventures. These interspersed scenarios can either be written by the GM to suit the players, or the GM can pick one of the many “side quests” that will be included in the book.

That's a lot of fantasy gaming!

Wow! What a day it's been! The Kickstarter funded last night, and at this point we've moved on to unlocking the project's stretch goals! That's great!

Stretch Goals

So without further ado, let me announce the first four goals:

$1600 - One-Sheet Scenario #1 - This funding level unlocks a short adventure supplement for Age of Ambition, set in or around the city of Melanoc. Great for a one-shot or for dropping into the What Lies Beneath campaign. It will be made available to all backers in PDF.

$2000 - Poster Map - Our second stretch goal unlocks a poster map of Melanoc, the city in which What Lies Beneath takes place. It will be made available to all backers and patrons in a high-resolution image format, and available in print as an add-on.

$2500 - One-Sheet Scenario #2 - This funding level unlocks a second short adventure supplement for Age of Ambition, also set in or around the city of Melanoc. It will be made available to all backers in PDF.

$3000 - Player's Brief - The What Lies Beneath Player's Brief will be a full color PDF document containing all of the player-facing information and options from the What Lies Beneath campaign and sourcebook. Perfect for GMs to distribute to their players before the game! It will be made available to all backers in PDF, and available in print as an add-on.
